[Request] Select Weapon Types for Proficiency

Some options give proficiency with an entire group of weapons instead of, say, "Simple Ranged" or just one specific item. For example, the Dwarven Weapon Proficiency feat gives training with all axes and hammers.

Perhaps the proficiency selection pop-up could include a section at the end for picking weapon groups. It would override the check-boxes for anything applicable, like how the "Simple Melee" selection auto-picks everything below it.

Turns out this is surprisingly difficult to do, based on how the groups are defined (and would create even more clutter on this lengthy form, though that is hardly a dealbreaker). But since proficiencies are only cosmetic, is it really all that valuable? Whether or not it is an eventual goal, it will probably have to remain the purview of the "special" field for now :\

I would assume that an eventual goal is to have proficiencies accounted for, so if someone tries to equip a weapon they don't know it won't give them the accuracy bonus. An unlikely situation but it can happen and ruleset implementations generally try to account for unlikely things too.

With the list being compressed, perhaps it could be rewritten to have a separate column for weapon classes? Or maybe an extra category at the end. That might be better.

The way the individual check-boxes gray out when the bigger category is checked can be used here too -- in this case, if someone were to check (f'rinstance) the Flails group, it would override the entries for the Bola, Double Flail, Scourge, Spiked Chain, etc., and in the listing it would just say "Flails" at the end of the list.

So, for example, a dwarf rogue with the Dwarven Weapon Training feat would have their list say something like "Dagger, Hand Crossbow, Short Sword, Shuriken, Sling; Axes, Hammers". (Dwarves get the throwing hammer and warhammer, but these individual items would be overridden by the feat giving all Hammer types.) Likewise, if that rogue instead took a feat that gave them proficiency with all Light Blades, it might say "Hand Crossbow, Sling; Light Blades" (because their other three weapons are all in this category).

It might be better to prioritize it differently, listing broad groups first (like "Simple Melee", then narrow groups ("Polearms"), then individual weapons.

I've done this sort of UI design before, so I'm confident you can get it to work.

It's not the UI design, or conceiving how it would display, that's difficult—rather, it's how forms work in Foundry. If two checkboxes are linked to the same property, it changes the form's returned value for that property to an array rather than a boolean, which of course ruins it completely. We'd have to set up a routine where we "flatten" those values before saving data, or rig something where a certain set of checkboxes were the "real" ones and the others were dummies that copy their state to the real ones. And on the backend, the proficiency selector is a template used for lots of different trait types, that works based on the config defining parent and child groups. So we'd need to change the way that's handled if we want to fake up child groups instead...

I'm not suggesting it's impossible! Of course it's possible. And I don't think it's an undesirable update either. It's just... quite annoying, for something that (at least for the foreseeable future) has no actual effect <XD
