Weapons dont fire

during combat no ships get damaged and the player ships automated weapons dont fire either, when i went onto the weapons console i found i could not fire either.

If you attack a fleet that is already engaged in combat with another fleet, some ships do start off damaged.

Upon more studying i have found that weapons can fire for about 5-10 seconds after a combat is initiated, but after that it doesn't work.
