Template code for dealing with "Other"s for closed questions

Often consultations with have closed questions where you can pick a select of predefined options or choose "other" and type in a free text box.
We need some template code to help group these free text answers into new options, into a new "other" group, or back into the predefined options.
This will almost always need the analyst to make some manual additions, but it would be good to simplify this process. Maybe using something excel based?
