possible to crop actor image?

Would it be possible to crop the top of the actor images on the plex side?
This way the top of the image where the head is should fill more instead of their chest or whatever.
These images are not an issue with stash but how plex already crops all corners of the image in a round frame, it makes sense to let it fill the width and take the top of the image from that width.

I investigated this request and wanted to share what I found.

The challenge:

Image cropping requires decoding the image format (JPEG/PNG), which needs a library like PIL/Pillow. The Plex plugin environment runs Python 2.7 with sandbox restrictions, which creates some significant constraints:

1. Pillow 6.2.2 is the last version supporting Python 2.7 (Pillow 7.0+ dropped Python 2)
2. Pillow includes compiled C extensions for each platform/architecture
3. Bundling these would require maintaining binaries for ~8+ platform combinations:
   • Linux: x86_64, i386, armv7, aarch64
   • macOS: x86_64, arm64
   • Windows: x86, x64
   • ChromeOS: additional complexity

This is technically feasible (other plugins like Sub-Zero.bundle bundle complex dependencies), but it adds significant maintenance burden for this single feature.

A cleaner solution:

The better approach would be for Stash to support image cropping server-side. Stash already has resize parameters for thumbnails - adding crop parameters would:

• Work for all Stash clients, not just this Plex plugin
• Avoid platform-specific binary dependencies
• Keep the logic centralized

I'd recommend opening a feature request at stashapp/stash for image crop parameters on performer image endpoints. This aligns with existing requests for cropping functionality in Stash.

Unless Plex does a major update that moves the plugin framework to Python 3, this will always be complex to implement plugin-side - especially with cross-platform and ChromeOS support to consider.
