Hi everyone,
I am currently trying to set up a COAWST three-model coupling run. However, I encountered an error while executing coawst.bash to generate the coawstM executable.
I am not sure what caused this issue, as I have successfully run three-model coupling cases before without seeing this specific error.
Could someone please take a look? Any help or insights would be greatly appreciated.

is this coawst v3.8?
I see you have a "-" in your path. coawst 3.8 uses cmake to build swan, and there is a problem if you have a "-" in your path.
/home-yx/users/nsyx_hgq/COAWST-master
make a folder without the "-" in it.
something like:
/home-yx/users/nsyx_hgq/COAWST_master

Thanks for the suggestion. I have already tried a clean build, but the issue persists.

I am currently using the COAWST-master branch (I am not entirely sure if it corresponds to v3.7 or v3.8). Even when I use the sandy header file, I still encounter the same error.

It is worth noting that if I set #undef WEC_VF, the problem disappears. However, I haven't been able to locate the conflicting call in the files. I even searched the entire COAWST directory using grep (case-insensitive) and couldn't find any reference to crosskss. I also tried renaming the file to Ramasun to avoid using hyphens, but that made no difference.

Just a quick follow-up regarding my previous reply. I performed some isolation tests to narrow down the issue:

ROMS + SWAN (2-way) + #define WEC_VF: The build succeeds.

ROMS + SWAN + WRF (3-way) + #undef WEC_VF: The build succeeds.

ROMS + SWAN + WRF (3-way) + #define WEC_VF: The build fails with the crosskss error.

It seems the error is specifically triggered by the combination of 3-way coupling and WEC_VF.

I suspect this might be related to the data exchange between SWAN and the Atmosphere model (possibly involving swouta, as hinted by some external resources), but I am unable to locate crosskss or swouta in the MCT source code to confirm this.

i think you are using an older version of the code.
The CROSS KSS is a combination of 2 different variables. Look in swanout1.ftn, lines 1213 to 1220 are

an older version of the code sometimes combined the CROSS with KSS. but it has been updated.
please try a new version of the code (the whole code, not just this file).

Thanks for the feedback. Regarding the version, I am a bit confused about the branches on GitHub.

I noticed there is a master branch (which appears to be v3.7) and a main branch (which appears to be v3.8). I was previously building from master.

Should I switch to the main branch to ensure I have the latest code? Which branch do you recommend using for the most stable 3-way coupling?

I have already tried the new version of the code, but I still get the same error:

I even reinstalled MCT and related components, but the problem still cannot be resolved. Using the header files provided with the Sandy example also does not work. The only way to successfully generate coawstM is by undefining wec_vf.

I apologize for only getting back to you now. I have been trying to identify the cause of the issue over the past couple of days, but have been unable to find a solution.

Please follow these steps:

1. make a directory called COAWST
2. cd COAWST
3. type git clone https://github.com/DOI-USGS/COAWST
4. that will give you a new version of the code in a directory called COAWST

Sorry, but when I use the new mode, inlet_test always reports an error. I can only get ROMS to run. The error message is as follows.
get_numswan_grids.f90:10:11:

Fatal Error: Cannot open module file 'm_coupling.mod' for reading at (1): No such file or directory
compilation terminated.
make: *** [/home-yx/users/nsyx_hgq/Projects/Inlet_test/Coupled/Build_roms/get_numswan_grids.o] Error 1
make: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....

I am currently trying the solution mentioned in #276:
cmake .. -G "Unix Makefiles" -DUNIX=ON -DMPI=ON -DNETCDF=ON -DCMAKE_VERBOSE_MAKEFILE=ON
However, it gets stuck at this step and fails to generate the Makefiles. I am currently consulting the relevant engineers.
Why does SWAN in the newer versions of COAWST need to be built manually with make, whereas in the older versions it could be used directly without this step?

the newer version uses cmake to build SWAN.
can you post the full output of the build? the error may have occurred earlier.
