i am using virtualbox by the way if that helps in any way the vm only has 4 GB of ran bc my host only has 8 GB with 25 GB of storage

Same scenario for me. the kernel image isn't in the (hd0,3) partition along with the rest of the standard files--it is instead in (hd0,2).
