The MBP is not supported by bbswitch, have you looked at gmux?

I have not. Where would be my starting place?

Is the major difference between the devices bumblebee supports and the MPB the hardware mux?

All non-MBP devices are supported by bbswitch, Apple is acting weird again and needs gmux. See https://github.com/ah-/gmux-scripts for example. Bumblebee can work with it if you set PMMethod=switcheroo

Would it be reasonable to implement support for using gmux (in lieu of bbswitch on Apple hardware) in bumblebeed? Is this a "patches welcome" situation?

edit: oh, right, gmux is integrated with the drivers to expose a switcheroo interface.

Right, gmux uses the switcheroo interface. I don't know if it still works with recent kernels, but you can give it a go.

I’m considering gmux as an answer to this issue.

Not closing this yet, need to look at documentations to see if this case is accurately described.

I've got a macbook mid-2014 and I'm not sure it's actually still possible to use the gmux in place of bbswitch, as of Ubuntu 16.04 with a 4.4.0 kernel. The vga-switcheroo interface in /sys/kernel/debug seems to be missing, and I've got all the necessary modules loaded.
