Hi! I am new to open source and i am having a hard time understanding how to configure git settings. The code given was something like this
git config --global user.name "YOUR_GITHUB_USERNAME"
git config --global user.email "YOUR_GITHUB_EMAIL"

Hey! No worries at all, this part confuses almost everyone when they’re new (^^)
These commands are basically how Git knows who you are.
You just set your username and email, and whenever you make a commit, Git uses them to show you as the author.

git config --global user.name "your-github-username"
git config --global user.email "your-github-email"

The --global part means Git will use this info for all your projects, so you don’t have to repeat the setup every time you start a new one.

By the way, these commands are mostly for people who use Git to push, pull, commit, etc.

When you send your changes from your computer to a repository, Git just needs to know who made that change.
That’s why you set a username and an email - it’s just identification.

But if you're contributing through GitHub Codespaces, you usually don’t need to set these manually, since GitHub handles most of the configuration for you.
