If you enable flash and take a picture of something up-close, the resulting picture ends up black or very dark.
It acts like the camera tries to compensate for the brightness (reducing shutter speed for example), but then the light goes off right before the image is captured -- resulting in a scene not lit with too high of a shutter speed.
It may just be a timing issue on image capture and the light.
Using the always-on Torch gets around this issue, but your light is always on. The problem isn't as noticeable when taking a picture at a distance, because the flash doesn't affect the scene very much.
